The Semen Distribution Centre produces, cryopreserves and supplies high-quality frozen semen doses from elite, pedigree-recorded bulls of indigenous cattle breeds. It plays a key role in the institute's genetic improvement programme, enabling wider use of superior germplasm through artificial insemination (AI).
Semen doses are made available to state animal husbandry departments, milk unions, AI technicians, KVKs and progressive farmers, supporting breed conservation and productivity enhancement of indigenous cattle across the region.
Elite, progeny-tested bulls of indigenous breeds are maintained under scientific feeding, health and breeding soundness protocols.
Regular semen collection using artificial vagina technique, followed by evaluation, dilution and extension for freezing.
Processed doses are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen containers, preserving viability for long-term use.
Every batch is tested for sperm motility, concentration and post-thaw viability before release for distribution.
Frozen semen straws are supplied to state AI networks, milk unions, KVKs and registered farmers on request.
Pedigree and progeny performance records support sire evaluation and planned breeding programmes.
